Jan Franken Pzn

Here one for the lovers of European linocut prints, in this case Dutch

This was a really strong striking image. Simply printed in black on a white almost transparent tissue paper. It was attached to a very dark coloured backing board which I presumed was original, which did nothing for the effect. Once I had placed a clean bright white slip under the paper - it became a different picture, bright and full of life.

Quite an old print as it was dated '24 and signed J Franken Pzn ?? Who ?? Well I didn't know, but I do now.

Joannes Petrus Josephus (Jan) Franken Pzn (1896-1977) to give him his full name, no wonder her prefered Jan. He was born in the Hague in the Netherlands, he studied at the Koninklijke Academie van Beeldende Kunsten (Royal Academy of Figurative Art) where his teacher was Frits Jansen. He was predominately a landscape, still life and portrait painter as well as book illustrator and printmaker. He was a member of several Dutch art societies including; He was a member of Pulchri Studio , Group (The Hague) , The Hague Art CircleAssociation for the Advancement of Graphic Arts The Graphic, the Independents (Amsterdam) and the Dutch Federation of Professional Artists .

I try not to copy too many photos from other websites as i'm not too sure on copyright issues. Luckily Gerrie at Linosaurus has already posted about this artist, so to see some oils and portraits by him try - http://gerrie-thefriendlyghost.blogspot.com/2010/06/j-pzn-franken.html
